Pick up on an interest
For books, you might write: “You enjoy crime novels. I just finished a Scandinavian novel. Which book surprised you most recently?” For walking: “You like paths near the water. Do you prefer going early in the morning or later in the day?” Choose something you are genuinely interested in. These are prompts, not guarantees of a reply.
Keep it short and leave room
Avoid intimate questions, long life stories, and comments about someone’s body. One to three sentences are a useful start. If she replies, respond to what she says instead of immediately running through another list of questions. If there is no reply, you can leave it there. Interest is voluntary and cannot be forced by writing more often.
